Icom over the network

A modern Icom - IC-7610, IC-7300MK2, IC-7760, IC-9700, IC-705 - has its own network server: the same one RS-BA1 talks to. ShackAssistant logs into it directly. One network connection carries CAT, the radio's audio both ways and its spectrum scope, over a cable, WiFi or the internet. No RS-BA1, no virtual COM ports, nothing extra to install.

Step by step

Connecting

  1. On the radio: switch on its network server and make a user with a password (on an IC-7610: MENU → SET → Network). Note the radio's IP address.
  2. Settings → Rig Control, pick your Icom as Rig Model and tick Network (Icom LAN) beside it. The serial fields make way for the network ones.
  3. Host: the radio's address. Port: 50001, the radio's default. CI-V and Audio can stay on auto (port + 1 and + 2) - fill them in only when a router forwards them to other ports, for a second radio or a station on the internet.
  4. User and Password, as set on the radio. Show lets you check what you typed.
  5. Save it as a preset, and press Connect on the main window.

From there on it is an ordinary rig connection: the frequency follows the radio, a clicked spot tunes it, and WSJT-X can share it through the rigctld server. Closing ShackAssistant signs off from the radio properly, so the next start - or RS-BA1 - finds it free.

The radio allows one network user at a time. While ShackAssistant is connected, RS-BA1 or wfview cannot be, and the other way round.

Audio quality: LAN or internet

Like RS-BA1, each direction has its own setting: AF (RX) is what the radio sends to you, MOD (TX) what you send to the radio. Each can be switched off, and each has a sample rate, a codec and a buffer.

SettingWhat it does
Sample rate8, 12, 16, 24 or 48 kHz. Higher is better audio and more data.
CodecLPCM 16-bit (best), u-law or LPCM 8-bit (half the data).
Buffer (ms)How long audio may wait for a late packet. More is smoother on a poor link, at the cost of delay.
Retransmission audio dataA lost packet is asked for again. Leave it on.
Send the radio's scope over the networkOff saves data on a weak link - the radio then sends no scope at all.

Not sure? Press one of the Recommended buttons:

AF (RX)MOD (TX)
LAN16 kHz, LPCM 16-bit, 120 ms8 kHz, LPCM 16-bit, 150 ms
Internet16 kHz, LPCM 16-bit, 200 ms8 kHz, LPCM 16-bit, 250 ms

An IC-705 on WiFi is a different link from an IC-7610 on a cable. Because the audio settings are part of the preset, one radio can have a 705 home and a 705 portable preset with different quality.

The radio's audio also appears in every sound-card list of the program as Icom LAN (radio), at the bottom. Choose it in Key Master, the voice keyer or the recorder and they receive and transmit straight over the network. For transmitting, set the radio's modulation input to LAN (IC-7610: MENU → SET → Connectors → MOD Input; on the IC-705 it is called WLAN).

Remote operating

Speakers and microphone on this PC

Under the connection fields are two more: Speakers and Microphone. Choose a card and the radio's audio plays on this PC, and your microphone goes to the transmitter. They are sound cards of this computer, so they are not part of the preset.

  • The microphone only goes on the air while you transmit - never just because PTT was pressed somewhere else. That keeps the noise of the shack off the air.
  • PTT from a message key: put <PTT> (toggle), <PTT ON> or <PTT OFF> in a message key. Esc drops it.
  • Volume and Mute sit beside the scope: a slider for the speakers, and a Mute button that turns red. Without a speaker card they are grey.

PTT always keys, also without a microphone chosen - then you simply talk into the radio's own microphone.

WSJT-X and other programs

WSJT-X only sees Windows sound cards, so the audio goes through a virtual cable (for example VB-Audio Virtual Cable). The radio stays connected to ShackAssistant; WSJT-X controls it through the rigctld server.

  1. ShackAssistant, Rig Control: Speakers = CABLE Input, Microphone = CABLE Output. Tick the rigctld server.
  2. WSJT-X, Audio: Input = CABLE Output, Output = CABLE Input.
  3. WSJT-X, Radio: Hamlib NET rigctl, 127.0.0.1:4532, PTT method CAT.

When WSJT-X keys PTT through the rigctld server, ShackAssistant opens the microphone for it. One cable for both directions does not howl: while you transmit, the radio's audio to the cable is muted, and the microphone only opens once what was still playing has drained.

The scope in the main window

With an Icom on the network, a Scope block appears at the bottom of the main window: spectrum on top, waterfall below. Click ▾ Scope to fold it away - folded, the radio does not even send it, which saves data.

On the headerWhat it does
Span±2.5 kHz to ±500 kHz, centred on the VFO. In fixed mode it says fixed.
StepWhat one notch of the mouse wheel tunes: 10 Hz up to 25 kHz, including 6.25 and 12.5 kHz.
RX ▾RF gain, squelch, ATT and preamp - only the steps your radio really has.
UndockThe scope in a window of its own, with the radio panel below - see next.
  • Click in the spectrum or waterfall to tune there. Roll the wheel to tune by the step - fast spins are smoothed, so the radio is never sent an older frequency after a newer one.
  • A transverter or QO-100 layer is respected: the scope shows and tunes the real frequency.

The scope in its own window: a radio panel

Press Undock and the scope moves into a window of its own - on a second screen it becomes a front panel for the radio, after the example of RS-BA1. Dock (or the window's X) puts it back. Only what your radio has is shown.

WhereWhat
HeaderScope on/off, CENTER/FIXED, VBW, HOLD and the reference level, beside Span, Step and RX.
Left of the scopeThe modes, one button each (LSB, USB, CW, RTTY, AM, FM, DATA ...). Below them the speaker volume and Mute.
Right of the scopeThe bands of your radio.
Over the waterfallAn S-meter bottom left, Po and ALC bars bottom right.
Under the scopeThe frequency - type one and press Enter - and the other VFO beside it, or in memory mode the channel's name. Bottom left an RX/TX light.
VFOVFO A/B (or MAIN/SUB), A=B, swap, SPLIT, and memory mode with the channel up/down. An IC-705 has a Bank button for its memory banks.
FilterFIL1-3, width, SHARP/SOFT, twin PBT and the auto and manual notch.
Antenna / TXANT1, ANT2 and RX-ANT (IC-7610), TUNER and output power.
Duplex / ToneSimplex, DUP-, DUP+, tone and tone squelch with their frequency - for repeaters.
Receive / TransmitPreamp, ATT, IP+, AGC, NB, NR, the MIC settings (input, gain, levels), AF, RF gain and squelch.
PTTA big button bottom right. On the air it turns red and flashes.

Every button lights up only when the radio confirmed it - what you see is what the radio is doing, also when you turn a knob on the radio itself.

The window has a minimum size so that everything stays readable, and it remembers where it was. Close ShackAssistant with the scope undocked and it opens undocked next time.

No radio needed

Try it without a radio

Help → Radio scope demo (no radio) plays a radio with a few stations on the band, so you can see the scope and the panel - tuning, span, the buttons - before you connect one. It stops by itself as soon as a real radio connects.

Troubleshooting

If it does not work

What you seeWhat to look at
Connect fails, the reason mentions the login User and password as set on the radio - Show lets you check. Is RS-BA1 or wfview still connected? The radio takes one user.
Connected, but no audio Is AF (RX) switched on, and did you choose Speakers or Icom LAN (radio) somewhere?
The radio transmits, but nothing is heard The radio's modulation input must be LAN (WLAN on the IC-705).
Choppy audio, mostly on WiFi Press Recommended: Internet for longer buffers, or lower the sample rate. Switching off power saving of the PC's WiFi adapter helps a lot.
No scope Send the radio's scope over the network must be ticked, and the block unfolded.

The Hamlib log (Help → Open Debug Log Folder) says what the connection did: what the radio offers, lost and repeated packets, and for each transmission how loud the audio was and whether the radio confirmed PTT.
